The new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of TP Organics describes the top research and innovation priorities of the European organic sector until 2020. These priorities were selected in a consultation with more than 300 responses from organic businesses, farmers, researchers and NGOs. They are the most important challenges to be solved in order to drive the development of the sector and strengthen its competitiveness. The new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda will be used to influence funding priorities of EU research programmes, but it can be used to advocate for more organic oriented research at national level too.

11.30 to 12.30 pm: Financing business-research cooperation for Innovation in the organic sector

The organic sector is the frontrunner of sustainable food production. Innovation is needed, however, to maintain that position and boost further development of the sector. Horizon 2020, the EU's framework programme for Research and Innovation, offers various instruments to finance innovation and business-research cooperation, including the SME instrument and the Fast Track to Innovation. These instruments will be explored in this session.

The SME Instrument is dedicated to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises that are EU-based or established in a country associated to Horizon 2020. It offers support for feasibility studies, prototyping and commercial exploitation. Amongst other priorities, the SME instrument seeks to promote resource-efficient food production and eco-innovation.

The Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) is the only instrument in Horizon 2020 that provides funding for close to market, business-driven projects, that is open to proposals in any area of technology or application. The aim is to reduce the time from idea to market and increase private sector investment in research and innovation. It offers support from demonstration phase to market uptake, including piloting, validation of business models and standard-setting.
